My Knee Hurts...Again

I've been plagued with a bum right knee for ages, but I only really noticed it when I started practicing yoga nearly 3 years ago.

Since then, it's been on-again and off-again. I can't really say that it's ever healed completely. Recently, with my daily home practice, I've been getting closer and closer to a pain-free ardha padmasana (half lotus). I do this with a lot of care and attention each time I move my knee in an external rotation. I thought my work was paying off.

However, yesterday, something triggered a deep ache in my right knee that I can't seem to shake.

Every step today has been worrisome and painful: downhills, uphills, stairs, even just standing still--it all hurts my knee.


Steven and I came home early from a day out.

He made dinner, and now I'm calling it an early night. Hopefully I'll wake to a healthier, happier knee.

Beautiful run and delicious lunch


I set out for an early evening run today to conquer the trail I couldn't find previously.

Well, I did it. I found it.

Ok, I took take a little detour...BUT I STILL FOUND THAT BITCH.

SEE?




This roughly 2 miler loop is called Balls Head Reserve (yes, ha-ha, I know). 

It's incredibly beautiful. 


You start on a gum-tree-lined residential street with the bay in the distance.


Then, the houses end and you get to a peninsula jutting out into the river. This is the start of the loop. To your left is the gorgeous Sydney Harbour Bridge. 

You have a choice here, to continue onto the shorter route along the road, or take a trail.


Sorry for the blurry picture...I was trying not to trip over my feet. 


The trail ends far too soon (I think I was only on it for 5 minutes?), and you exit onto the main looping road. There are gum trees everywhere, and the smell of eucalyptus in the air is refreshing and invigorating. 

I wish Balls Head was bigger so that my run wouldn't be so short. 

Yes, I did just wish for a bigger Balls Head (giggle, sorry I'm 14-years-old apparently). 


No run would be complete without my compression socks. 

I'm loving these socks, by the way. I really do think they help me recover faster, with less soreness and stiffness the next day. 

However, I haven't tried them after a long run, since I'm limiting my runs to no longer than 2.5 miles these days anyway.

On a completely unrelated note, I made some yummy food the other day: rice paper wraps!


For the all-important sauce, I bought that shameful Plum sauce hiding in the back. It's horrible, dreadful stuff. Don't use it. Don't waste your money. You're better off licking dishwasher fluid.

Instead of poisoning myself with plum crap sauce, I combined Vegetarian oyster sauce, honey, lime, and chopped parsley. Delicious.


This makes an incredibly easy lunch or snack. 

Douse the rice paper wrapper under the sink for just 3 seconds, set it on a plate. 

Layer on some fresh lettuce, spinach, or whatever green you like. But you MUST remember the Thai basil. That shit makes this so yummy you'll want to slather it all over your face. 

Then, if you have some tofu, cashews or eggplants, put those in too. 

Spoon in some sauce, and wrap it up. 

Go to town.

V-day in the Haus


So it turns out my boyfriend doesn't just sit around, eat fried chicken, and scratch his armpit hairs, eh? 

Because isn't that what men do on Valentine's Day?


Not mine! He got me a bag of coffee.


A pack of Caramel Tim Tams (by far the best version).


And a scrunched up face of joy.


The best part may have been the water bottle EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE I LEFT IN CANADA.

No wait, the best part may have been this:


Unfortunately, these turned out nowhere as good as Prairie Girl Bakery back in Toronto. Why is it so hard to find really good fresh cupcakes in Sydney? And can someone ship me a Prairie Girl to bake me some awesomely soft and fresh red velvet with cream cheese frosting please? Or ship me this girl. That's cool too.

Anyway, I got Steven a couple of ties because all the moving had ruined one of his nicer ones.


Not sure if he likes them...seeing as how they're kind of hard to match with shirts. Who knew that ties would be that hard to buy?


Steven wrote me a wonderful card:

And then we went out for curry. 


And it was green.

I'm the new kid on the block...that is, I'm lost.

Today's run was sure to be a good one.

Slightly overcast with a cool breeze.


Plus, I would be running on roads I've never ran before, seeing as how Steven and I just moved to this 'hood. So there was no way I'd be bored.


I ran past a park, and then I reached a bay-side running path that used to belong to BP oil plant.



The scenic path ended far too soon. I climbed a set of stairs to get back to the main road.

Back onto asphalt, I started seeing road names that reminded me of a walk/run I read about in a book.

I didn't know which way to turn to get to the Reserve, and before I knew it, I was back at the train station.

Last run in Hyde park, and a move to Wollstonecroft

Last week, I had my last run in the Hyde Park loop.


And good riddance, too, because that loop is BORING.


This weekend just past, Steven and I moved to a new apartment north of the city.


All right, truth is, Steven did the packing, the moving, the carrying-heavy-stuff-up-stairs, and all that.


My face and I went off to work.

Someone has to bring home the bacon broccoli.


I came home to our new address without lifting one finger!

YAY Work FTW.

Rain in Sydney, and work anyway

It's been a few days of rain, with maybe one day of break in between.


With all the hot-cold-hot-cold weather, both Steven and I got sick recently, which resulted in 9:30 bedtimes and lots of our favourite herbal remedy and not-so-favourite throat gargle (that stuff tastes like choking on iodine).

Needless to say, I've had to skip most of Ashtanga this week and my run this weekend.


Despite the sniffles and coughs, I got all done up for a Saturday work day.

I love my new job, so it makes working Saturdays really not so bad.


My wonderful co-worker got me some genuine Australian lamington. That shit is gooooood.

It's a soft white sponge cake dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut. They filled this one with fresh cream.

After a long day of work, I got home to a bunch of Caution cones in our building because of the rain.


It turns out I live in Sparta.
